I want an online proofreading job

Blogs are becoming more and more popular these days. It is amazing the variety of subjects to be found on a blog.

Tonight, this blog is letting all who read it know that I am looking for an online proofreading job.

I love to read. I have owned and read books from all types of authors about psychology, anatomy and physiology, spiritual books, all of Ayn Rand's books, books that date back to the early 1970's and many others. Dog books and cat who books. Books about Medicine Wheels and the Phoenix Rising. The Harry Potter Books.

It is a great passion of mine. So, the other day I asked myself if there wasn't some way to make money reading books. Into a search engine the query went and "Proofreading" came up. I said, "perfect."

Of course, that search led to many others and tonight I am putting all this in my blog plus my qualifications for this type of job.

My first job at the Sherwood Inn, Tacoma, WA was about bookkeeping which meant proofreading figures and invoices. That was back in the mid 1970's.

Then it was two years at Tacoma Community College getting a Technical Arts Degree in Real Estate. It was a great time and I loved it.

The late 1970's had me working at a local Real Estate Office in University Place, WA (the office has been closed for many years). I was a part-time secretary learning how to put listings and sales in the computer, answering questions from the sales people and other duties as needed. Filing and answering the phones.

That job led me to Citizens Federal Savings and Loan Association in Tacoma, WA getting the position of Broker-Loan Coordinator. I knew nothing about typing up real estate closing documents but I soon learned. I had a wonderful lady boss. The first Deed of Trust I put in the typewriter I tried to put in folded in half. This is a document that was NCR paper and had to be unfolded in the middle to be able to type on. I have never forgotten that episode. It only happened once.

That was a wonderful job. I typed the closing documents for all the escrows that closed outside of our office. I worked with Mortgage Brokers from various offices and their escrow offices.

This job entailed very detailed work. We are talking legal documents that had to be signed and notarized by the appropriate party and recorded. These documents had to be Proofread and correct. The closing statements had to add up and balance out. It was a very specific job. In those days the documents had to be typed, legal descriptions had to be double-checked for accuracy. The closing statements detailing the credits and debits had to be done the old fashioned way; meaning a calculator and knowing the difference between a debit and a credit.

This job led me to opening my own escrow office: Prestige Escrow Co, Inc. Tacoma, WA in 1981 and closing January, 1986.

By then I not only needed an escrow officer license from the state of Washington, I needed a Limited Practice Officer License from the state mandated by the Bar Association as we were practicing law without a license.

My office brought me many different types of escrows plus it fell on my shoulders to do all the administrative work as well. The need for accuracy and detailed proofreading became more intense. I perservered until a personal tragedy changed my lifes direction and the office closed.

I took a break from the workforce between January, 1986 and August, 1989 when I spent ten (10) months in the Peace Corps in Zaire, Africa in the field of Public Health Administration. I was then 50 years old.

Being in Africa made me realize so many things and appreciate life in the US so much more. It was a great experience and one that I would not have missed for the world. I recommend it for everyone.

Upon returning to Washington State in June, 1990, I decided to start Massage School in September. Getting through school and getting my license took about 14 months.

There again, we learned to write chart notes and had to be specific as to the area of the body being worked on; names of the muscles and the modality used. More detailed charting and very careful proofreading as some of those chart notes had to go to the insurance companies if I wanted to get paid.

My massage practice dwindled to a close in 2002 when I went to work for Catholic Community Services, Tacoma, WA doing in-home care. There was no need for proofreading or charting. My duties consisted of taking care of people who had trouble taking care of themselves. It was a very rewarding and fulfilling job. This job lasted about a year and a-half.

At that time I met my husband online and spent my time refinishing his house so it could be sold.

Now we are full-time RV'ers living in a 2000 40' Country Coach with two senior Chinese Pugs and I am ready to put my passion for reading into another career.

This is, basically, the story of my life. I am a stickler for details and can pick out a misspelled word at a glance. I have started letting authors know if there is a missing word/misspelled word in what they have written so it can be corrected. I also let them know I am looking for proofreading jobs.

I plan to take a Proofreading course with UniversalClasses.com as I feel that will really help me get started. There is a great website that has all kinds of grammar help on it along with spelling quizzes.

Anyway, thank you all for stopping by and listening to the synopsis of my life.

Have a great day and stay safe.
Katharine
